How thick should my patio be?

Four inches over a compacted base is standard for a residential patio. Drainage and control joints matter just as much as thickness for handling freeze-thaw.

Can you pour right against my house?

Yes — we slope the slab so water runs away from your foundation and use an expansion joint where the patio meets the house so they move independently.
